Juanita Castro, younger sister of former Cuban leaders Fidel and Raul Castro, whom she opposed for decades, has died in her 90s in Miami where she lived in exile, a journalist with ties to the family said.

“Juanita Castro, an extraordinary woman, a tireless fighter for the Cuban cause she loved so much, has passed away,” Maria Antonieta Collins, who helped write the memoir of the deceased, who lived in southeast Florida since the 1960s, announced via Instagram. .

Juanita Castro left Cuba in 1964 after falling out with her brothers Fidel — who died in Havana in 2016 — and Raul over disagreements with the direction taken by the 1959 Cuban revolution.

In exile in Miami, she publicly denounced the politics of her brothers. She worked with the CIA, codenamed “Donna,” according to her own account.

In her memoirs, under the title “Fidel and Raul, my brothers, the secret history”, she stressed that she was unable to come to terms with the fact that she was the sister of the communist leaders and to join the community of Cuban exiles in Florida.

“Undoubtedly, I suffered more than the other exiles,” he had written. “For those in Cuba, I was a deserter because I denounced the regime. To many in Miami, I was persona non grata because I was Fidel and Raul’s sister.”

According to the Univisión network, he died of natural causes in a Miami hospital.
