In 1938, young Geoff Banks from Devon, England began corresponding with Celesta Byrne from Texas, USA, through a school pen pal program, which was very popular at the time.

Geoff and Celesta are the oldest pen pals in the world as they never stopped writing to each other lately 85 years.

Geoff, a former engineer, kept in touch with Celesta even during his time World War IIwhen serving on the British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious in the Pacific.

They were both 16 years old then. Today is 100 years old and continue to correspond but using the advantages of technology.

The two kept her transatlantic friendship them for almost 90 years. In fact, they have met in person twice – for the first time in 2002 in New York and another time in 2004 – but they insist that there is no romance between them.
