The United States special envoy for the climate crisis said the plan involves 35 countries and focuses on research and development, supply chain issues and the regulatory process
United States Special Envoy for the Climate Crisis John Kerry presented at the UN Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai an international commitment plan for nuclear fusion, stating that this technology could be a crucial pillar of the world’s energy future.
John Kerry stated that 35 countries are participating in the plan. It focuses on research and development, supply chain issues and the regulatory process.
“Fusion has the potential to revolutionize our world,” John Kerry said at COP28.
Nuclear fusion, in contrast to fission, consists of the joining of two light nuclei to form a heavier nucleus.
This reaction is what powers stars, such as the Sun. Thanks to the extreme heat and pressure conditions prevailing there, hydrogen atoms combine to form heavier helium atoms, releasing a colossal amount of energy.
On Earth, this process can be achieved with the help of powerful lasers or magnets.
Fusion has several advantages over fission: there is no risk of a nuclear accident and the waste generated is much less.
The process does not emit gases responsible for the greenhouse effect.
The United States and Britain signed a nuclear fusion cooperation agreement on November 8.
