With the agreement expiring in three months and its possible renewal, Italy has officially informed the Chinese government, through its embassy in Beijing, of the termination of cooperation
The Meloni government, according to reports in the Italian press, has officially decided to abandon the “New Silk Road” economic cooperation initiative, also known as the “One Belt One Road” initiative.
This is the agreement that the Beijing government presented in 2013 with the aim of restructuring the international economy with an emphasis on the role of Asian states and the creation of a series of infrastructures in many countries of the world.
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, in view of the expiration of the agreement in three months and its possible renewal, Italy officially informed the Chinese government, through its embassy in Beijing, of the termination of cooperation.
The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had already announced her intention in the summer, on the occasion of her visit to the United States. Italy was the only country of the Group of Seven (G7) most developed industrialized nations, which had signed cooperation with China on the “New Silk Road”.
Information indicates that the Meloni government, despite the termination of this particular cooperation, conveyed, through the Italian embassy in Beijing, that economic relations with China will remain of strategic importance.
