Criminal prosecution in weight of US President Joe Biden’s son practiced yesterday Thursday, for second time, from American justice, this time for tax evasiona case that will undoubtedly add fuel to the fire of the Republican opposition’s complaints, while there is not even a year left until the 2024 presidential election.

The 53-year-old Hunter Biden, “engaged in fraud” that allowed him to avoid paying $1.4 million in taxes due for the 2016-2019 taxable period, according to the indictment.

“He spent millions of dollars living on reckless extravagance instead of paying his taxes,” continues the document, which lays out nine charges (three felonies, six misdemeanors) ranging from tax fraud to filing false information.

The former lawyer and businessman squandered money to satisfy his drug addiction, buying “escort” services, luxury cars and clothes, all according to the indictment.

His new prosecution means the president’s son, who already faces gun charges, could be tried twice next year as his father continues to campaign to stay in the White House.

The prosecution was expected after a deal struck by Hunter Biden’s lawyer with U.S. Attorney David Weiss — which would have allowed him to avoid a painful trial and possible prison time by pleading guilty — was canceled over the summer.

The agreement covered both the charge of tax evasion and the illegal possession of weapons. But she withdrew because of doubts expressed by a judge in July about whether she was legal.

Following this development, Hunter Biden was formally prosecuted in September for submitting false information when filling out an application to purchase a handgun in 2018, specifically for assuring that he was not addicted to drugs.

Investigation to impeach the president

According to reports in the US press, Hunter Biden is at risk of being sentenced to 17 years in prison for the tax evasion aspect. He already faced a 25-year prison sentence if convicted of illegal gun possession.

The judicial adventures of the Biden son are being watched very closely by the Republicans, who are clearly going to use them against the father, while accusing the whole family of corruption.

The opposition was already accusing the judiciary of intending to bury the proceedings against Hunter Biden.

Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, began an investigation in September to impeach the Democratic president in the Senate over his son’s highly controversial foreign dealings.

They accuse Hunter Biden of having suspicious activities in Ukraine and China and of taking advantage of his father’s network and name.

They go even further, attributing to the father this time an intention to protect a Ukrainian natural gas company, on whose board Hunter Biden sat, lobbying Kiev when he was Barack Obama’s vice president to secure the removal of Attorney General Viktor Sokin. The prosecutor was dismissed in 2016.

Despite the Republican allegations, Hunter Biden — at this stage at least — is not facing prosecution for any of his foreign dealings.

The US Department of Justice insists that the special prosecutor David Weiss, entrusted with the investigation of Hunter Biden, has complete independence. Appointed during the days of Donald Trump, the judge remained in his position after the Biden administration took over.

After recovering from his drug and alcohol addictions, Hunter Biden has been painting lately.

His father has always denied any involvement in his child’s affairs, and publicly strongly defends his innocence. In May, he told MSNBC that he had “faith” in him and that he was “proud” of Hunter.
