Greater Chennai is home to facilities of the Indian units of various global companies, including Hyundai Motor, Daimler and Apple’s suppliers Foxconn and Pegatron.
While many of them, including Taiwan’s Pegatron and Foxconn, were back up and running within a day or two of the cyclone’s arrival, some TVS group factories in the worst-hit areas have yet to open, according to industry sources.
IT service providers in Chennai have announced work from home for this week, while schools and colleges have closed. Some schools and colleges were turned into temporary shelters.
This week’s floods in Chennai have awakened memories of the extensive damage caused by those that swept through the city eight years ago, killing around 290 people.
In the state of Andhra Pradesh, which is further north and where the cyclone first touched down on Tuesday afternoon, the damage caused is relatively limited. Roads were damaged and trees were uprooted by the large waves on the coasts.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh visited Chennai yesterday, Thursday, and announced that New Delhi will release a second tranche of 4.5 billion rupees to help Tamil Nadu deal with the damage it has suffered. The federal government has also approved a Rs 5.6 billion plan to deal with flood damage in Chennai, he added.
