US diplomacy “strongly condemned” yesterday Friday the attacks against the US embassy in Baghdad and US troops and forces of the international anti-jihadist coalition in the territory of Iraq, demanding that the Iraqi authorities “bring the perpetrators to justice”.

“Many Iran-aligned paramilitary organizations operating freely in Iraq threaten the security and stability” of that country, “our soldiers and our partners,” the State Department said in a press release.

Rocket barrages fired early yesterday targeted the US embassy, inside the walls of the heavily guarded Green Zone, without causing any injuries, a development that once again underlined the risk of escalation in the region, two months after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.

The attack, for which there was no claim of responsibility, is the first against the embassy since pro-Iranian armed groups began launching similar strikes against US troops and forces of the Washington-led international anti-jihadist coalition in Iraq and Syria.

Yesterday there were five more such attacks in Iraq and Syria, with their total now reaching 85, according to sources in the American Pentagon.

“We urge Iraqi security forces to immediately investigate these attacks, arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” the US State Department press release insisted, reminding Baghdad of its commitment to protect diplomatic missions and facilities. .

However, Washington expressed satisfaction that Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Zia al-Sudani condemned the attack on the American embassy, calling it “unacceptable and unjustified”.
