The mother of a notorious Mexican drug lordby Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, died on Sunday, aged 95due to complications from gallbladder surgery, according to family members and the media.

Maria Consuelo Loera died in a hospital in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa state in northwestern Mexico, a stronghold of the drug cartel founded by her son, according to the same sources.

El Chapo, who for years was considered one of the most powerful drug lords in the world, was arrested by Mexican authorities in 2016 and extradited to the US in 2017.

After being sentenced to life in prison by a New York court in July 2019, he is serving his sentence in a maximum security prison in the state of Colorado.

After “El Chapo’s” conviction, his sons, known by the nickname “Chapitos” (“the little Chapos”), inherited control of the Sinaloa cartel, according to US authorities.

Some sons have been prosecuted by US authorities.

María Consuelo Loera made a notable public appearance in March 2020 when she met with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was visiting the state of Sinaloa. The president went to shake her hand while she was in her car, which caused an uproar.

The mother had asked the head of state to help her secure a passport visa to visit her son at the maximum security prison where he is serving his sentence in the US.

He was never able to go.
