The number of young Brazilians, aged 6 and 7, who they do not know nor to they read nor to write increased by 66% during her period coronavirus pandemicduring which schools remained closed for several months, according to a report released today by a non – governmental organization.

According to official figures collected by Todos Pela Educação (All for Education), 40.8% of students in this age group, which is crucial for literacy, remained illiterate in 2021.

This is the worst percentage since 2012, with a total of 2.4 million children in this situation last year, compared to 1.4 million in 2019.

The NGO described the data as “worrying” and warned of the dangers of mass early school leaving in the largest Latin American country.

“We urgently need coherent policies to enable these children to learn to read and write and to continue their schooling,” said Gabriel Correa, public policy officer for Todos Pela Educaçao, in a press release.

“Such a setback is unacceptable,” he added.

The closure of schools in Brazil has widened inequalities, as a large number of poor children have been unable to attend online classes due to a lack of access to quality internet at home.

In a country with deep skin color inequalities, an NGO report shows that almost 50% of black children aged 6 and 7 (47%) can neither read nor write, compared to 35% of whites. children.
