No mention of F16 issue in hour-long phone call – ‘Well done’ by Biden for recent constructive steps taken in Greece-Turkey relationship
The telephone conversation that the American and the Turkish President had yesterday lasted more than an hour, in which they agreed to stay in touch until the NATO Summit in July in Washington.
Biden and Erdogan discussed Gaza and Sweden but – according to a statement from the White House – there was no no mention of the F16 issue.
In addition, in the announcement of the White House there is also a reference to the diplomatic efforts being made for a new Greek-Turkish approach.
As is characteristically noted, “President Biden expressed his support for the recent constructive steps taken in the Greece-Turkey relationship».
“Biden did not invite Erdogan to the White House”
According to the correspondent of SKAI in Istanbul, Manoli Kostidi, the Turkish media makes special reference to the fact that – despite their hour-long conversation – Biden did not invite the Turkish president to the White House for four meetings, until the end of the term of the American president.
In Biden’s four years in office, the Turkish president has not visited the US even once – unlike the Trump administration, with which he maintained close relations.
Ali Cinar – correspondent of HABERTURK in Washington, said:
“The truth is that there was a wait for a phone call from Biden to Erdogan. As President Biden on the occasion of Gaza had spoken with the leaders of the region but not with Erdogan. It was an important phone call and the information states that it lasted an hour.
Sure the question is when will these phone communications change and when will a four to four meeting take place. President Biden is in his fourth year in office and to date has not received an invitation to the White House. Turkey is the second largest country in NATO.
However, it is an important phone call and it is important that Turkey be heard on the issue of Gaza.
There is information that at the end of December, basically at the beginning of January, the F-16 issue in Congress will end. That is, there is a hopeful expectation that the issue of F-16 will be approved at the beginning of January. Of course, these were also discussed in the White House telephone conversation with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan”
