US: Congressional vote to avoid “paralysis” of the federal state

by

The House of Representatives yesterday approved Tuesday a draft law that provides for the extension of the current state budget until March 11, preventing, once again, the threat of paralysis of the federal public services.

The bill, passed by several Republicans in addition to the Democrats who tabled it, thus paves the way for the Senate, where it is expected to be approved before being signed by President Joe Biden.

The two parties in Congress have not yet reached an agreement on the adoption of the budget for the financial year 2022. They are thus forced to extend, for one to two months at a time, the current budget, which was adopted during the presidency of Donald Trump.

In addition to depriving funds of specific social programs, this also delays other congressional initiatives and the passage of reforms that Joe Biden wants. The White House resident wants to bring some political victory to give a new impetus to his presidency, with a few months left until the crucial November midterm elections.

In late September and then in mid-December, intensive negotiations were held in Congress to avoid in extremis the threat of paralysis of the federal state, the so-called shutdown. The most recently adopted text expires on February 18, in nine days.

The sudden cessation of funding for federal services would put hundreds of thousands of civil servants in technical unemployment. Despite their deep disagreements, most parliamentarians from both factions want to avoid at all costs this situation, which infuriates many citizens.
