The mother of a 6-year-old student in the US who shot and seriously injured his teacher was sentenced yesterday, Friday, to two years in prison for neglect of supervision of a minor by a court in the state of Virginia.

Daysa Taylor, 26, had already been sentenced to 21 months in prison by a federal judge for illegal possession of a firearm.

The judge of Newport, Virginia, in the eastern United States, “felt the circumstances warranted a sentence greater than the maximum six months without parole provided by state guidelines,” according to a statement issued by local judicial authorities..

He therefore sentenced the defendant to 5 years in prison, 2 of which were non-parole, to be added to her sentence of 21 months in federal prison and “shall serve the two sentences consecutively.”

On January 6, her 6-year-old son brought a gun to his school in Virginia and shot his teacher. She suffered injuries to her arm and chest and was hospitalized for two weeks.

Daysa Taylor pleaded guilty in June to illegally obtaining a firearm and to making a false statement on the government form she was required to fill out to purchase the gun.

Taylor stated on that form from the federal agency, which is in charge of controlling guns, tobacco and explosives (ATF), that she does not use illegal drugs, which was false.

After a number of fatal gun incidents involving minors, pressure is mounting in the US to punish parents who, often negligently, allow access to these weapons.

Last week, an American teenager, tried as an adult even though he was 15 when the incident happened, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2021 murder of four students at his school with a gun given to him by his parents in Michigan, in the northern US.

His parents, accused of neglecting to supervise a minor and ignoring warning signs that he would act out, were charged with manslaughter, something that has rarely happened again to this day.
