This is the first “official” procedure under the new European legislation on digital services (DSA).
The European Commission announced today the initiation of an “official investigation” aiming at the social medium X Networking (formerly Twitter) for breaching its obligations under European content control and transparency regulations, two months after the start of a preliminary investigation.
It’s about her first “official” procedure under the new European legislation for digital services (DSA).
“Gone are the days when big online platforms behaved as if they were too big for regulation,” said European Commissioner for Digital Policy Thierry Breton.
The Commission had announced on October 12 the opening of a preliminary investigation into “false information”, “violent and terrorist content” and “hate speech” targeting billionaire Elon Musk’s social media, five days after Hamas attacks against him. Israel.
This first stage involved a request for information to verify Platform X’s respect of its European obligations.
The answers given by the American company, as well as the “transparency report” it published in early November to present the means of mitigating the contents it applies, did not convince the EU executive body, which now has control and sanctioning powers .
European legislation now provides for fines that can reach 6% of the annual turnover of the accused group. In cases of serious and repeated violations, a platform may even be banned from operating within the EU.
The Commission explained today that, with the start of the “official” process, it will continue to “gather evidence” by requesting new information from X, conducting interviews and inspections.
This process now allows the Commission to take steps to compel X to comply with the rules or to accept the “remedies” proposed by the platform to address the issues of concern.
No time limit has been set for the ongoing investigation.
