US: National Archives urge Justice Department to investigate former President Trump

by

The US Treasury Department has asked the Justice Department to investigate how former President Donald Trump handled the White House archives when he stepped down, the Washington Post reported.

The FBI said it had recovered 15 boxes of official documents from Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Aides to the former Republican president are also looking for more to hand over to the National Archives.

Officials suspect that Trump may have violated the law regarding the handling of government documents and for this reason they contacted the Ministry of Justice, the newspaper writes, citing two sources. It is not clear at this time whether the ministry will order an investigation into the matter.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The Law on Presidential Records stipulates that written communications related to the official duties of a president must be kept.
