Extensive problems in the operation of the railways, especially in northern Germany, are caused by the bad weather “Zoltan”, which has been affecting the region since yesterday. There are delays in routes, while ferry connections to Denmark are canceled and many open-air markets remained closed yesterday, Thursday evening.

Wind speeds in the North Sea locally exceeded 100 km/h.

According to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Office (BSH), the water level in the Elbe is expected to rise by around three meters above the average high level (note: a storm surge is considered serious if the level exceeds 2.50 meters) and there is a risk of flooding in Hamburg, but also in other areas of the northern coastline, the approach to which should, according to the authorities, be avoided. The peak of the phenomenon is predicted for 11:00 (local time).

In rail transport, damage was recorded in parts of the network due to the strong winds and since last night there have been delays or even cancellations of regional and long-distance routes in the north, which are estimated to continue until at least midday and will mainly affect the Munich-Hamburg routes , Frankfurt – Hamburg and Cologne – Kassel, as well as the local routes around Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.

German Railways (DB) crews were already working at night to repair the damage, however, according to a statement from the company, “many problems will only be visible in the light of day”.

Bonn was among the areas worst hit by last night’s downpour and strong winds, with at least 76 calls to emergency services for damaged roofs, flooded areas and fallen trees.

In Saxony-Anhalt, two people were slightly injured in traffic accidents caused by weather conditions.

In many areas, outdoor Christmas markets closed early or did not open at all, following a relevant recommendation from the authorities. The phenomena are expected to subside gradually from midday, but will intensify again at night. “Zoltan” is expected to weaken on Saturday afternoon.
