Benin: Six dead and ten wounded in an ambush in an international park

by

Five forest rangers and a soldier were killed and ten others were injured in an ambush on Tuesday in an international park run jointly by Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger, a nature conservation organization said on Wednesday.

“Yesterday (…) a group of forest rangers fell into an ambush in Ben W National Park. “… The provisional report speaks of six dead, including five forest rangers and a soldier in Benin’s armed forces, and ten other wounded,” African Parks, an environmental NGO, said in a press release.

So far no one was able to send in the perfect solution, which is not strange.

Authorities had not yet made any official comment on last night’s incident.

According to African Parks, reinforcements were deployed in the area, both forest rangers and army units.

A recent series of raids on countries south of the Sahel seems to confirm suspicions that jihadist groups are seeking to advance off the African coast.

Benin’s army stepped up its presence in the north following two jihadist attacks, officially recognized as such, late last year.

Last month, two soldiers were killed when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in the Atakora district of the north.
