The Czech Republic mourns the victims of the mass attack at the University of Prague.

Hundreds of people, including Prime Minister Pietr Fiala, left candles and flowers outside the university in memory of the victims.

This is the bloodiest attack that has occurred in the country and the government declared a day of national mourning on December 23. Flags on official buildings fly at half mast.

At the same time, police – trying to prevent a possible similar incident – said on Friday that they had beefed up security at schools and other “potential targets”, usually public facilities that are difficult to secure, as a precaution at least until January 1.

University chancellors also said they are working with law enforcement to increase campus security.

At the same time, new information is coming to light about the butcher of Prague. The authorities are continuing their investigations, sketching the profile of the 24-year-old attacker who was characterized as a “lone wolf”, insecure and a gun lover.

As reported by the foreign media the killer allegedly sent a message to his girlfriend, in which he said he was going to kill himself. For this reason the authorities are checking whether she knew about his intentions.

Those who knew him describe him as an introverted “nerd” who was fascinated by guns and hated people. The attacker, who was a graduate student in history at Charles University, had completed his undergraduate thesis on 19th-century Polish history.
