The opposition claims that there were serious irregularities in the elections held on Sunday, December 17 – Tough attitude from the Serbian president
The situation in Serbia remains unsettled in the shadow of the events of the previous days with a request to repeat the elections.
The opposition claims that in the parliamentary, regional and municipal elections held on Sunday, December 17 serious irregularities were committed which altered the result. Today, Monday at noon, students took to the streets of Belgrade and demonstrated in front of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and then blocked the main avenue of the city for four hours.
The police announced that during last night’s incidents outside the Belgrade City Hall, two police officers were seriously injured, while serious damage was caused inside the building. It was also reported that 38 arrests were made while the search for other protesters continues who participated in the episodes. It is noted that last night protesters clashed with the police in their attempt to storm the Belgrade town hall. The incidents escalated when hooded men attacked police officers with stones. The opposition complains that the incidents were caused by organized football team fans who cooperate with the authorities and aim to provoke the intervention of the police.

The President of Democracy Aleksandar Vucic declared in a speech that he was unyielding pointing out that the state will not succumb to the violence of the opposition parties that were defeated in the elections. Vucic thanked foreign agencies for providing information to the Serbian authorities about the intentions of the opposition. “I want to thank those foreign agencies that made it clear that they knew what was coming, informed us and provided the information to our own intelligence services so that they responded promptly and immediately preventing the thugs’ plans,” said Vucic.
The Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, revealed today thatj “Russian intelligence warned Serbian authorities before the election about the intentions of the opposition”. In the morning, the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, received him in his office Russian Ambassador Alexander Bokan-Herchenko.
“I informed Ambassador Bokan-Herchenko about last night’s riots in Belgrade and reiterated that we will do everything to preserve the safety of our citizens and Serbia,” Aleksandar Vucic wrote on Instagram.
Moscow in recent days often refers to domestic politics developments in Serbia expressing its support for Aleksandar Vucic. Commenting on the events in Belgrade, the press representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, compared the opposition’s demonstrations to the events in the “Meydan” square in Kyiv in 2014 and repeated the warning “about a Ukrainian scenario of a violent overthrow of the legitimate authority in Serbia”. The opposition rejects Moscow’s claims and expresses concern over Russia’s direct involvement in Serbia’s internal affairs.
