To rekindle the Middle East. A general of the Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s ideological army, was killed in Syria in a shelling attributed to Israel, Iran’s official Irna news agency reported.

The general Sayed Razi Mousavi, one of the Guards’ most experienced advisers in Syria, was killed “in an attack by the Zionist regime a few hours ago” in the Sayida Zeinab district, in the southern suburbs of Damascus, Irna reports.

According to security sources who spoke to Reuters, Mousavi was in charge of coordination of the military alliance between Syria and Iran.

Iran’s state television interrupted its program to announce his death, saying he was one of the Guards’ oldest advisers in Syria. He was also ‘among his companions Qassem Soleimani” of the head of the Cots Force, the Guard’s elite corps, who was killed by a US drone strike in Iraq in 2020.

In a first reaction, the Revolutionary Guards they warned that Israel would pay for the death of Mousavi, who held the rank of brigadier general and was responsible for the logistical support of the “axis of resistance” (i.e. the armed organizations fighting Israel) in Syria. “Undoubtedly, the usurping and barbaric Zionist regime will pay for this crime,” the statement read on state television.

The president of Iran Ibrahim Raisi blamed Israel warned that Israel “he will surely pay for this crime.”

“This action is undoubtedly another indication of the frustration, weakness and incompetence of the Zionist regime in the region,” Raisi said in his statement.

There is currently no comment from the Israeli armed forces. When asked about Mousavi’s death, a spokesman replied that he “does not comment on foreign media reports.”

Israel has been launching attacks for years on Iran-linked targets in Syria. Earlier this month, Iran said Israeli strikes killed two members of the Revolutionary Guard working as military advisers in Syria.
