The Tunisian Interior Ministry announced yesterday Wednesday that three “terrorists” were killed in a military operation being carried out in the mountainous region of Kasrin (Kasserini) near the border with Algeria.

“A soldier was wounded by terrorist fire,” Tunisian gendarmerie spokesman Houssem Eddin el Jbebli told AFP.

Weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized during the air force-backed anti-terror operation, the interior ministry said without elaborating.

After the 2011 revolution that ousted Zine El Abidine Ben Ali as president, Tunisia has been faced with a jihadist insurgency that has killed dozens of soldiers, police and civilians, including foreign tourists.

In recent years, authorities claim to have made significant progress in the fight against jihadists. The army and gendarmerie have been conducting regular operations in the mountainous Kasrin region of western Tunisia, where they say jihadists have taken refuge.
