She served in the war zone for 18 months – Authorities are now trying to determine the cause of her death
A British volunteer doctor in Ukraine has reportedly been found dead in her bed in Kievin the early hours of last Sunday, Christmas Eve.
This is former chemistry student Katherine Mielniczuk whose body was found by members of her unit, her 151st unit of the Special Operations Forces.
Posting on social media, Ukrainian volunteer organization Project Konstantin said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Katherine Mielniczuk. We learned this horrible news a few hours ago and after discussions with her family, we offered to help her. All we know is that was spotted in her bed this morning (24 December 2023), her cause of death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage. More information will be announced later by the authorities. For now, we are focusing on the pain her family is enduring and we are trying to ease their suffering by giving them the opportunity to fly to Ukraine and we want to help with repatriation costs.”
“Rest in peace, Apache,” the post concludes.
“Kat,” as she was affectionately called, served as a trainer and combat medic for a group called the Menace Medics.
Writing on her blog, the chemistry graduate said: “At Menace Medics, our goal is to assist medics with critical medical equipment and vehicle repairs/fuel that will exceed our ability to operate, thereby saving the lives of courageous foreign fighters and relentless Ukrainian soldiers.”
In a post on Nov. 28, she said she spent her first few days in an ambulance by sharing with her online friends a photo of a puppy that appeared to be in the vehicle with her.
In a video posted last July, ‘Kat’ gave an interview to a local reporter where she said she was working in Bristol when she decided to register in Ukraine saying she felt she was “her duty to help”.
And he added: “I’ll stay as long as it takes maybe it’s not safe to be here or until I have to go back to my brother or my mother.”
Authorities are now trying to find out the causes of her death.
