Citing a source close to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the Kommersant newspaper reported that rockets fired from the Kharkiv region hit an ice rink in the central square of the city of Belgorod, houses and a shopping mall.
There was no official reaction from Kiev. However, according to unnamed sources cited by the Ukrainian news agency RBC-Ukraine, Ukraine’s armed forces launched attacks against military installations in Belgorod in response to the Russian bombardment on Ukrainian cities the previous day.
The Ukrainska Pravda news website cites a Ukrainian security source who blames Russian air defenses for the destruction of civilian infrastructure, citing “deliberate and planned provocation” among other things.
