Dead and injured from the new fierce attacks while the tension between the two countries is escalating
Ukraine’s shelling of the city of Donetsk today had an effect to kill four people, as an official appointed by Moscow in eastern Ukraine stated, while airstrikes launched by Russia in several Ukrainian regions resulted in the death of at least one person, local officials said.
Thirteen people were injured also in “heavy shelling” by Ukrainian forces of the center of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, the Moscow-appointed head of the greater Donetsk region of which the city of Donetsk is the administrative center, wrote on the Telegram platform.
At least one person was killed and nine injured in a Russian attack with an unmanned aircraft (drone) in the port of Odessa, in southern Ukraine, as Oleh Kiper, governor of the Odessa region, stated on Telegram.
Kiper said fragments of downed drones caused fires to break out in residential buildings in various parts of the city.
Video uploaded to social media by Odesa Mayor Hennadi Trukhanov shows him inspecting an apartment with broken windows.
“They say that how you welcome the New Year dictates how the rest of the year will be,” Trukhanov said in a post.
“Well, this year Ukraine will break that rule: we will persevere and win.”
Officials in the Lviv region of western Ukraine, which borders Poland, said a Russian airstrike in the early hours of today caused damage to a university building in the city of Dubliani and at the monument to the commander of the Ukrainian Resistance Army (UPA) who operated in the 1940s on the outskirts of the city of Lviv.
Ukraine’s air force said the Russian airstrike also targeted the Mykolaiv and Dnipro regions.
Reuters cannot independently confirm the Russian and Ukrainian reports. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that erupted with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
