A family tragedy occurred half an hour after midnight on New Year’s Day in Limassol, Cyprus, resulting in the loss of the lives of two siblings and their grandparents.

This is 27-year-old Evanthia Georgiou from Limassol, who was driving the vehicle. Co-driver is her grandfather, 72-year-old Nikolas Zavros from Limnati. Evanthia’s 74-year-old grandmother and Nikolas’ 17-year-old brother were also in the vehicle.

The quadruple fatality occurred half an hour after midnight, at the junction of Giannou Kranidiotis and Agia Anastasia streets. Earlier, all four members celebrated the coming of the new year as a family. The two grandchildren would make the route from the area of Ekali to the village of Limnatis, to take their grandparents home.

The traffic accident occurred when a semi-truck which was heading north on Yannis Kranidiotis street, under circumstances that are being investigated, collided with the vehicle driven by the 27-year-old woman who was heading south on the same street and at that moment was attempting a right turn.

As a result of the severe collision, the vehicle carrying the four people deviated from its course, climbed the islet and ended up on the guardrails. As a result of the violent collision, all four occupants were trapped in the wreckage of the car and the intervention of members of the Fire Service was needed to extricate them. Afterwards, they were picked up and taken by ambulance to the Limassol General Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Asked if there were any eyewitnesses, he said “there is some testimony that is being evaluated.”

It should be noted that a couple of foreigners, 44 and 38 years old, were on board the semi-truck, who were injured and are being treated at the Limassol Hospital. According to Mr. Charalambous, his driver underwent an alcohol test with a zero reading.
