An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck north-central Japan today, public broadcaster NHK reported.
According to the AFP agency, citing the American Geophysical Institute (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning along the western coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures.

A tsunami of up to five meters is estimated to reach the South in Ishikawa Prefecture, according to the weather service.
