Fifty-six people suspected mainly of drug smuggling and human trafficking and wanted by 18 countries were arrested today in Turkey, the Turkish Interior Ministry announced.

The suspects, who were arrested in 11 of the 81 Turkish provincesincluding those of Istanbul (northwest), Antalya (south) and Izmir (west), were mainly sought after by the US, Germany, India, Israel, Russia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, the Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the ministry said in a statement.

An international arrest warrant had also been issued against some of them by Interpol.

The suspects are accused of murder, pimping, money laundering or participation in a criminal organization.

“We’re going to cage them all, one by one,” Turkish Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya wrote on the X social networking platform.

Turkish police have in recent months multiplied operations against members of international organized crime, some of whom had long found refuge in Turkey.
