Some were found turned on their sides, while other dead had been buried “bent” on their knees.
A rare medieval burial site has been unearthed by archaeologists near Cardiff, the capital of Wales.
The 6th or 7th century cemetery was found on its outskirts Fonmon Castle and revealed an “unusual” variety of medieval burial rituals.
Of the 18 tombs excavated so far, out of a total of 70, archaeologists say the skeletons have been found in many strange seats.
Some were found shot at sidewhile other dead had been buried “bent over» on their knees.
One of the “crouched burials” is even more unusual as it was placed inside the moat surrounding the cemetery, with a “large amount of stone” placed on top of them.
“Clearly, certain individuals were characterized as well were being buried as different,” Andy Seaman, the Cardiff University archaeologist leading the dig, told the DailyMail.
Fonmon Castle was built in 1180, but the cemetery is believed to have been established there 600 years earlier.
The discovery of a medieval cemetery in the area is already a spectacular find, but the location in which the burials were found makes the discovery even more mysterious, scientists say.
