EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell sounded the alarm today, saying Lebanon should not be drawn into a regional conflict as a result of Israel’s war with Hamas..

Speaking during his visit to Lebanon Borel said it is imperative to avoid a regional escalation in the Middle East and warned Israel that “no one will emerge victorious from a regional conflict.”

Borrell made the above comments during a press conference with his prime minister Lebanon Najib Mikati following talks he had with senior government officials on the situation in and around Gaza, including the impact of the war and the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border.

“We are seeing an alarming intensification of fire along the Blue Line,” Borrell said.

After the withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon in 2000, after 22 years of occupation, the UN drew a “Blue Line” defining the border between the two countries.
