A street in Paris now bears his name David Bowiewith the official naming ceremony taking place on Monday on what would have been the late rock legend’s 77th birthday.

David Bowie Street is next to the Austerlitz station in the 13th arrondissement in the southeastern part of the French capital, according to a statement from the Paris City Council.

David Bowie died in 2016 at the age of 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Fans of the English singer-songwriter who attended the ceremony on Monday were visibly moved.

“I’ve been a fan for over 30 years it’s really emotional,” Karin told BFM TV.

Jean, a journalist who said he knew Bowie well, told BFMTV that the artist felt a connection to Paris.

The singer’s first gig outside the UK was in Paris in 1965. His Pin Ups album was recorded near the French capital in 1973 at Chateau d’Herouville after the Ziggy Stardust tour had finished.

City officials decided to honor Bowie’s lasting impact on music, fashion choices, theatrical aura and pop culture.

British singer Clifford Slapper sang at the event and Bowie’s friends, artist George Underwood and photographer Jeff McCormack cut the ribbon. Exhibition of their Bowie-related works hosted at Galerie Athéna until January 14th.
