The former US president is the preferred candidate for 49% of self-proclaimed Republicans, according to the survey.
Donald Trump maintains a wide lead over his rivals in the race for the Republican Party’s nomination ahead of the US presidential election just five days before the polls open and the state-by-state process begins, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released today showed.
The former US president is the preferred candidate for 49% of self-proclaimed Republicans, according to the survey.
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is getting 12% of Republican support, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSandis is getting 11%.
Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy secures the support of 4 percent of Republicans, while no other candidate receives more than 2 percent, according to the poll’s findings. A percentage of 18% of respondents say they do not know which candidate they will choose.
The poll of 1,941 self-identified Republicans was conducted across the country, which means it may not necessarily predict who will win the primary election next Monday in Iowa, the first of the states to decide the GOP nomination, in an election process that will determine who will attempt to unseat Democratic President Joe Biden in the Nov. 5 election.
The broader features of the race have changed little since the summer, even as legal challenges to Donald Trump have mounted and his opponents have been campaigning for months.
Most Reuters/Ipsos polls since August have shown Trump securing the support of about 50 percent of the GOP electorate. Meanwhile, his opponents have failed to make any headway.
