Koronovirus: 3,000 unvaccinated civil servants in New York are at risk of losing their jobs

by

About 3,000 municipal employees in New Yorkincluding many police officers and firefighters, risk losing their jobs today if they do not comply with the order to be vaccinated for coronavirus. This number represents less than 1% of the employees in the municipality.

“We do not fire them. “They are resigning,” said Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, warning them once again that they would be out of work. “We are clear. They must be vaccinated if they work for the municipality (…) they must follow the rules that had been set “before he assumes his duties, added the mayor who succeeded Bill de Blasio on January 1.

The measure concerns those employees who have already gone on holiday – that is, their salary is not paid – and have had until today to be vaccinated. To date, approximately 95% of the municipality’s 370,000 employees have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

For their part, those who oppose compulsory vaccination are organizing a new demonstration in front of City Hall today.

New York City was one of the first in the United States to take action last summer to pressure city officials to get vaccinated. The compulsory vaccination initially concerned teachers and, from 1 November, police and firefighters.

As with masking, compulsory vaccination is a divisive issue in the United States. Some conservative states have even taken legislative initiative to ban compulsion. At the same time, the US government fears that the truckers’ protests from neighboring Canada, which have been paralyzing Ottawa for two weeks, may spread to the US.
