Lebanon expressed on Saturday his deep concern on military strikes by US-led coalition forces in the Red Sea and Yemen, warning that unless the international community acts immediately to halt armed actions in the region, Israel’s war on Gaza could spread across the Middle East East.

Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry in a statement posted on X’s account, “expressed serious concern over the escalation and military actions in the Red Sea, as well as the airstrikes on Yemeni territory.”

The ministry stressed the importance of “reducing tensions, de-escalation and using military action through the coordinated efforts of the international and regional community to support stability in the region, including the security of navigation in the Red Sea region.”

The ministry warned that “the failure to address the real causes of this escalation, the total and immediate cessation of Israeli aggression and the war in Gaza, may widen the cycle that has recently begun, threatening regional and international peace and security”.

The ministry reiterated that “a just and comprehensive peace for the Palestinian issue, based on resolutions of international legitimacy, alone is capable of achieving security, stability and prosperity for the countries of the Middle East and the Red Sea region.”

On Friday, the White House, in a joint statement from 10 countries, said that “in response to the Houthi’s continued unlawful, dangerous and destabilizing attacks against ships, including commercial vessels, transiting the Red Sea, the United States armed forces and the United Kingdom, with the support of the Netherlands, Canada, Bahrain and Australia, carried out joint strikes in accordance with the inherent right of individual and collective self-defence, under the UN Charter, against certain targets in areas controlled by the Houthis in Yemen”.

Despite the attacks, the Houthi group’s Political Council said that all US and British interests have become “legitimate targets” for their forces in response to their “direct and overt aggression” in Yemen.
