Its general manager GoogleSudar Pichai, said in an internal document that the group will proceed with further job cuts this year, following a first wave of layoffs in 2023.
The head of the tech giant clarified that this wave of job cuts will not be “of the same magnitude as the reductions last year” and will not affect all teams at the Alphabet subsidiary, according to an internal email obtained by possession of the French Agency.
In early 2023, Google put in place a plan to cut about 12,000 jobs worldwide, or just over 6% of its workforce, to adjust to two years of frenetic growth in the post-pandemic era.
The group is expected to make significant investments this year, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, explained Sadar Pichai.
“In order to free up the funds to make these investments, we must make difficult decisions,” he wrote, referring to the job cuts.
“Many of these changes have already been announced» internally, in the groups they concern, the general manager continued, adding that further adjustments could take place during the year.
Alphabet had about 182,000 employees at the end of September 2023, about 7,800 fewer than at the end of 2022, according to documents released by the group.
According to media reports, Google fired 1000 people last week.
On Tuesday, the group told The Verge website it was further cutting hundreds of jobs, particularly in its large enterprise ad sales division.
Yesterday, about 100 employees of the YouTube streaming platform were informed of their departure, US media reported.
The majority of tech giants, with the exception of Apple, cut their workforce from 2022. Meta cut more than 20,000 jobs and Amazon 27,000.
