The British armed forces have succeeded for the first time in hitting and destroying aerial targets with a high-powered laser beam weapon, the UK Ministry of Defense has announced.

The laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) codenamed ‘DragonFire’ has been successfully tested at the remote firing range in the Hebrides, west of the Scottish coast.

The accuracy required for a successful hit is akin to hitting a coin from a kilometer away. Targets can be hit even if they are moving at the speed of light. However, the range of the laser weapon is not revealed for security reasons.

The ministry emphasizes that among the advantages of using this weapon is the extremely low cost, with each shot not exceeding ten pounds.

The successful test is being described as a “landmark” in the drive to integrate the technology into Britain’s air defense arsenal.
