On his first visit to neighboring Ukraine as prime minister, Donald Tusk delivered a message of friendship to President Volodymyr Zelensky
The leaders of Poland and Ukraine pledged today to face a thorny political difference which had blocked their crucial military alliance and to strengthen defense cooperation as Russia’s invasion heads into its third year.
On his first visit to neighboring Ukraine as prime minister, Donald Tusk handed over a message of friendship to President Volodymyr Zelensky and said the two sides had “reached a common understanding” on the Polish truck drivers’ protests.
“Poland will do everything in order to increase Ukraine’s chances of victory in this war,” Tusk said in a joint media interview.
Poland has become a key ally for Kiev as it seeks Western economic and military support against Russia, but relations between the two countries have soured in recent months as border blockades hit Ukraine’s economy.
The truck drivers agreed last week to suspend their protests which were intended to revoke the licenses of Ukrainian truck drivers for free access to the European Union until March 1.
“We understand the depth of the reasons that led to this situation, but we pay attention first and foremost to the depth of the threat posed to our people,” Zelenskiy said, adding that he welcomed Warsaw’s work on the issue.
The two leaders welcomed the two countries’ plans for joint arms production, and Zelensky wrote on Platform X that they discussed “a new form of cooperation aimed at larger-scale arms purchases for Ukrainian needs.” He did not give details.
Poland’s new government is exploring how to make more ammunition and military equipment part of a new aid package for Ukraine, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said last week.
Tusk’s trip coincided with Ukrainian Unity Day, which celebrates the 1919 reunification of western and eastern Ukraine, which has faced several invasions in its long history.
Zelensky chose this day to announce plans to grant dual Ukrainian citizenship to all people of Ukrainian descent and their descendants around the world outside of Russia.
