A record 22 tons of cocaine was seized during a military operation in Ecuador, officials said today, one of the largest drug busts in the country, which has been embroiled in an “internal armed conflict” against organized crime for the past two weeks.
The military said in a statement that the drugs, which were distributed in 733 packages, were likely destined for transport across Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The operation was preceded by six months of planning and monitoring, it added.
Yesterday, Ecuador’s armed forces posted video on X showing huge stacks of packages wrapped in plastic wrap, some of which had labels bearing the names of major airlines, at a site in the central Ecuadorian city of Vincennes.
The seizure comes as top US officials are expected to visit the country, seeking stronger ties in the fight against crime, amid a military crackdown on gangs launched by the Ecuadorian government in which 2,700 people have been arrested within 13 days.
Sunday’s seizure exceeds the 9.6 tonnes of cocaine discovered in 2021 behind a false wall in the coastal city of Guayaquil, destined for shipment to Mexico and the US, which authorities estimated at the time could bring in drug dealers about $450 million.
