The German Engine Drivers’ Union (GDL) suddenly announced that the strike that started last Tuesday night will end in the early hours of Monday instead of the evening of the same day as originally planned. The two sides will return to the negotiating table on February 5, while unionists have promised to suspend strikes until early March.

“We are finally negotiating again. Our customers can safely plan their trips and our employees have the prospect of a quick pay rise. All issues were discussed in a constructive atmosphere and a timetable was set for the final negotiations,” said German Railways (DB) Human Resources Director Martin Seiler. The aim of the two sides is to reach an agreement by the beginning of March. Until then, a “pledge of peace” by trade unionists is in place, with DB agreeing to pay a one-off €1,500 “inflation compensation” in March and to discuss employment models with fewer working hours for shift workers.
