Hungary’s far-right party Our Homeland hosted far-right leaders from Germany’s AfD and the Dutch Forum for Democracy
Hungary’s far-right Our Fatherland party will claim a western region of Ukraine home to around 150,000 Hungarians if Ukraine loses the war with Russia, the party’s leader said late Saturday.
The leader of the far-right party, Laszlo Torotskai, made the comments at a conference where the party, which has six members of the Hungarian parliament, hosted far-right leaders from Germany’s AfD and the Dutch Forum for Democracy, among others.
“Regarding the war in Ukraine, our message is very simple: an immediate ceasefire, peace and a negotiated solution,” Toroczkai said in a video posted on his party’s website, calling for autonomy for Hungarians in western Ukraine.
“If he the war ends with Ukraine losing its statehoodbecause this is also on the cards, then as the only Hungarian party taking this position, let me state that we claim Transcarpathia,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
The Hungarian Foreign Ministry and the Ukrainian embassy in Budapest did not respond to questions from Reuters.
In a December interview on public radio, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto is due to meet his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in western Ukraine on Monday to prepare the ground for a possible meeting between the two countries’ leaders.
