New Russian pretext for war? Russian state television appears to have launched a new “wave” of propaganda, claiming on television that Ukrainian nationalists have slaughtered or threatened to slaughter minority Russians in the east of the country, which observers fear could to be the “last step” of Moscow to justify an invasion of Ukrainian territory.
Dmitry Kiselyov, a Russian journalist also known as “Putin’s spokesman”, used his Sunday news program to spread baseless allegations that Ukraine had “tortured and brutally killed” thousands of civilians in the Donbas region.
In a TV post entitled “Preparing to Kill”, he also gave an interview to a separatist fighter in the region, who warns that Ukrainian nationalists threatened “To kill you and slaughter you everyone and hang your children on the wires “.
The tactic reflects Russian propaganda spread before the last Russian invasion of Ukraine (Crimea) in 2014, which was used by the Kremlin to justify its military action as “protection” of Russians living in the country. Today, there are estimated to be 148,000 Russian troops stationed on the Ukrainian border – backed by thousands of tanks and artillery – with Washington and London warning of war, and Washington talking of a Russian offensive as early as Wednesday.
