“We need to understand with whom we can really maintain military-technical and defense relations,” said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan
THE Armenia can no longer rely on Russia as its main defense and military partner because Moscow has repeatedly let it down, so Yerevan should consider forging closer ties with the United States and France, the prime minister said Nicole Pashinian.
THE Armeniaa small former Soviet republic bordering Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey, has relied on Russia as a major allied power, although Pashinyan has drawn the Kremlin’s ire by questioning the alliance’s foundations.
“We need to understand with whom we can really maintain military-technical and defense relations,” Pashinyan told public radio. Armenian Public Radio, when asked about the reform of the armed forces of Armenia.
“Previously this problem was simple because there was no such issue (…) Previously 95-97% of our defense relations were with the Russian Federation. Now this cannot be done for both objective and subjective reasons,” he stated.
According to PasinianArmenia should consider what security ties it should build with the United States, France, India and Georgia.
Pashinyan says that Russia abandoned Armenia when the Azerbaijan launched a military blitzkrieg operation to regain control of the breakaway enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, causing the exodus of Armenians living there.
Russia argues that Pashinyan’s own failure to resolve complex rivalries in the South Caucasus is responsible for the 2023 defeat of Armenian fighters in Karabakh.
Azerbaijan has accused France of sowing the seeds of a new war by supplying arms to Armenia, with which the United States is also courting.
