Power outages and warnings from the authorities for residents to avoid unnecessary travel
Landslides, flooding and strong winds hit southern California for a second day today, Monday.
Strong rainfall up to 2.54 cm the hour are expected to affect areas around Los Angeles for at least 24 hours. The “atmospheric rivers” that cause the storms have brought heavy rain, snow and strong winds to the state. Atmospheric rivers are a phenomenon in which water evaporates into the air and is carried by the wind, forming large currents that flow in the sky like rivers on land.
A state of emergency has been declared in 10 of the state’s counties.

Forecasters said torrential rain is the main risk facing California on Monday.
Yesterday, Sunday, the Weather Forecast Service (WPC), part of the National Weather Service (NWS), issued a level 4 rainfall warning for southern California.
The WPC said potentially “life-threatening” and “catastrophic” flooding threatens the Los Angeles Basin and surrounding area. He said landslides and drifting materials are also a risk.

The center added that “very heavy” snow is expected in the Sierra Nevada mountains, making travel “dangerous to impossible.”
The NWS said gusty winds of up to 70 mph (112 km/h) could cause further power outages and downed trees, though the winds will ease significantly by Monday night.
Large and choppy waves will also make areas along the coastline “extremely hazardous,” the NWS added.
On Sunday, flights from Santa Barbara airport were canceled and drivers stranded by flooding in Los Angeles had to be freed by rescue workers.
Hundreds of thousands of homes were left without power.
NWS officials urged people in affected areas to heed evacuation orders, avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible new power outages.
