Russian ambassador to EU: Russia will not invade Ukraine “unless provoked”

by

Russia “It will not invade Ukraine unless we are provoked,” Russian Ambassador to the European Union Vladimir Tsizov said in an interview with Britain’s The Guardian newspaper today.

“We will not invade Ukraine unless we are challenged to do so,” said the Russian ambassador, who has represented Russia in Brussels since 2005.

“If the Ukrainians launch an attack against Russia, you should not be surprised if we counterattack. “Or if they start blatantly killing Russian civilians anywhere, in Donbass or elsewhere,” he said, referring to the region in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists have been fighting Ukrainian forces for eight years.

Tsizov warned that a Ukrainian “challenge” could prompt the Kremlin to react.

“What I mean by ‘challenge’ is that they can stage an episode against the self-proclaimed Donbass democracies, provoke them, then strike them with all their might, thus provoking a reaction from Russia, in order to avoid a “humanitarian disaster on their borders,” he said.
