A top official in Ukraine’s security service (SBU) has been dismissed over the journalist surveillance scandal that emerged in January, a well-informed source told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Monday.
Last month, Ukrainian authorities announced an investigation into “illegal wiretapping and videotaping” of journalists from the investigative website Bihus Info, known in Ukraine for exposing corruption scandals.
The case had provoked the reaction of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called any form of pressure on journalists “unacceptable”.
An SBU official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, said “Roman Semenchenko was fired because of the surveillance of Bihus Info editors.” The decision was taken by the head of the SBU and ratified by President Zelensky, he clarified.
The management of Bihus Info admitted in January that some of its cameramen had used “illegal substances” at a New Year’s party, after videos and recorded conversations were released on YouTube. But he condemned the SBU’s “disgraceful special operation” that deployed some 30 officers to monitor its members for months, nearly two years after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
