Sweden plans to close its investigation into the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline at the bottom of the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany after apparently failing to locate a suspect, German media reported today.
According to the newspapers Sueddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit and the stations NDR and WDR, the prosecutor leading Sweden’s investigation will soon announce its end.
“I will make a decision tomorrow and I cannot tell you now what that decision will be,” Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist told Reuters today, declining to elaborate. “I can’t say more now“, he added.
Following the explosions inside the exclusive economic zones of Sweden and Denmark, both countries launched investigations, along with Germany.
The end of the Swedish investigation will have no impact on proceedings in Germany, according to media reports.
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on the Swedish prosecutor’s announcement today, that Russia has repeatedly asked for details of the Western investigation into the blasts, but has been told nothing.
Peskov called these pipeline explosions “sabotage of critical international infrastructure.”
