The devastating fires that swept through the tourist area of ​​Valparaiso, in central Chilehave claimed the lives of at least 131 people, according to the latest tally released today by the Chilean Forensic Service (SML).

SML clarified that out of the 131 dead, it has so far been possible to identify 35. The previous report published yesterday spoke of 123 dead.

Chile observes a second day of national mourning in memory of the victims of the fires, which began on Friday and are the deadliest in the country’s recent history.

Hundreds remain missing, while thousands of people have been left homeless.

Firefighters are battling dozens of smaller outbreaks in rural areas today after blazes burned whole neighborhoods in coastal towns Viña del Mar and Valparaiso in recent days.

The president Gabriel Borich described these fires as “the biggest tragedy” the country has seen since the 2010 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 500 people.
