During his meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, Abdulhamid Dbeiba said he applauds Turkey’s stance in supporting stability in Libya and the role it plays in supporting international efforts to hold elections, Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported.

The statement, made on the Libyan National Unity Government’s social media account, said Dbeiba and Fidan discussed political and economic issues as well as cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, Haqqan Fidan stated that his visit to Libya was held in order to discuss some issues of mutual interest mainly on “the situation in Gaza and support for international efforts to hold elections in Libya”.

The Turkish Foreign Minister arrived in the Libyan capital Tripoli this morning, coming from Malta.

In his statements yesterday, after his meeting with his Maltese counterpart, Ian Borg, in Valletta, Hakan Fidan said that “Turkey’s relations with the eastern side (of Libya) are progressing gradually. Our cooperation with the actors there continues. We have decided to reopen the consulate general in Benghazi. This will happen soon. Our businesses started working there again.”

He also said that “we do not want to see the current division between East and West become permanent” and stressed that Turkey continues its efforts to play a constructive role in the Libyan issue together with Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and other regional her friends.
