Political storm in Brazil. Many officials close to the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro, including members of his cabinet and military, have been detained on charges of attempting a coup against the government of the country’s current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

At the behest of Brazil’s Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moraes, Federal Police carried out an operation on Thursday that arrested, among others, former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, who served in Bolsonaro’s cabinet from 2019-2022, as well as top generals.

Those arrested are accused of attempting a coup against the government of Lula, who won the October 2022 election. and for organizing a criminal organization, stated in a statement by the Federal Police.

The Supreme Court also ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his passport within 24 hours.
