In an unthinkable act, a Kansas City, Missouri, mother was arrested and charged in the death of her one-month-old baby after she allegedly accidentally placed the baby in the oven instead of the crib, the district attorney’s office said.

Mariah Thomas, 26, was charged with first-degree felony endangering the welfare of a child in her death, Jackson County District Attorney Gene Peters Baker announced Saturday.

“We recognize the horrific nature of this tragedy and our hearts are heavy with the loss of this precious life. We hope the criminal justice system will respond appropriately to these horrific circumstances,” said District Attorney Baker in a press release.

According to court documents, officers were called to a residence in the Manheim Park neighborhood of Kansas City around 1:30 p.m. local time on Friday in response to a call about an infant not breathing. When the police arrived at the house they found little Zaraya, as the infant was named, covered in burns and her clothes burnt.

“I thought I put Zaraya in her crib and I accidentally put her in the oven,” Mariah Thomas allegedly told the infant’s grandfather, who gave a statement to police, according to court documents.

If convicted, 26-year-old Mariah could face 10 years to life in prison, according to Missouri state law.
