Six people were injured — one in a “critical” condition — by bullets on a subway platform in New York, the fire department of the American megacity announced.

According to media reports, one or two gunmen opened fire yesterday evening on passengers waiting for a train on the station platform in the Bronx district.

The station, Mount Eden Avenue, is open-air, with the tracks elevated, and drone footage captured a stationary train and plainclothes police working on the platform.

Of the six injured, one is “in critical condition”, four suffered “serious injuries” and the last one “slightly”, a spokesman for the New York Fire Department (FDNY) told AFP by email.

The victims were taken to nearby hospitals in the northern district, considered the most deprived in the city of 8.5 million people.

Citing their sources at the New York Police Department (NYPD), the media reported that the person who suffered the most serious injury succumbed to a hospital, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Crime, especially gun homicides, has seen a net decline in New York since 2022-2023, following the pandemic, while carrying guns in public is tightly controlled, compared to other US cities and states.
