Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that he had sent negotiators to Cairo for talks on a truce deal, as requested by US President Joe Biden, but the Israeli negotiators did not return for further talks as Hamas’ demands were unrealistic.

Netanyahu said there was no point in further negotiations until Hamas made changes to its demands.

In parallel, he said the Israeli army should continue its operation in Rafah, the city in the southern Gaza Strip where some 1.4 million displaced Palestinians have crowded.

As he said, if the Israeli military operation there does not continue, Israel will “lose the war” against Hamas.

At a press conference in Jerusalem, Netanyahu stressed that the Israeli army would continue its operation in Rafah even if an agreement is reached with the Palestinian Islamist movement to release hostages still held in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli prime minister also said that a broader diplomatic agreement with the Palestinians could only be achieved through direct negotiations without preconditions.
